Yogya - Bali on a
bike
This is definitely
one of the outstanding motorcycle trips you can do in Indonesia.
If you want to rush through, it takes two days of decent riding
(for instance: day 1: Yogya - Malang, day 2: Malang - Denpasar)
but you will be driving 10-12 hours/day and you will miss most
of the fun.
For an unforgettable
experience plan at least one week, take the back roads, use your
time for side trips, and get in touch with the local people whenever
possible.
Some highlights of
this trip were the road to Pacitan, the Malang area with stunning
beaches and nice twisty roads along the Mt. Semeru and Mt. Bromo
mountain ridge, and Mt. Ijen on the eastern tip of Java.
Well worth a visit
is also the Baluran National Park on the north-eastern tip of
Java
NO
TIP: If you really need to rush through, stay on the northern
main road: I've done Denpasar - Yogya door-to-door in 14 hours,
including 4h for the ferry and a bit of rest. DON'T try this,
if you are not absolutely used to riding in Indonesia.

| The
Province of East Java |
|
The
province of East Java has a very rich history of Hindu culture.
The Kediri and Majapahit kingdoms reigned from about the
11th century to the 15th century. During those times
, the Hindu arts, culture and literature flourished.
Many temples were built on the highland and mountain tops.
After
the 15th century, the area came under the dominance of the
Moslems. East Java now is a province covering an area of
some 48000 sq. km with a population well over 35 millions,
predominantly Moslems. It is the second most populated
province in Indonesia after West Java.
East
Java offers a raw natural beauty and magnificent scenery
with many tourist attractions. Some of the attractions
are the numerous temple ruins, scenic and beautiful highlands
and volcanic landscapes, beautiful beaches, national parks
and wildlife reserves. Perhaps the most beautiful
and well known attraction of all is the Mount Bromo complex.
This outer-worldly landscape of craters, sea of sand and
smoking volcanoes is easy for travellers to visit.
Some
other attractions are the Mount Ijen crater, the Meru Betiri
and Baluran Nature reserves.
