Poto Tano and Alas
  • Ferry harbour to Lombok. Crossing takes 1-2 hours.
  • The 2h ride from Sumbawa Besar is most spectacular in the afternoon when the sun shows the alang alang mountains in the most beautiful colours. One of my favourite parts of the ride.

Sumbawa Besar

  • the capital of the Western half of the island and the largest town in Sumbawa. Stay in Hotel Pantai Kencana, 10km outside of town on the road towards Alas on a beautiful beach.
  • visit the wooden Sultan's Palace
  • change money and fill up with petrol
Empang
  • Good for a quick stop on the way to Dompu, also has a losmen if you want to stay over night.

Mount Tambora

  • Not active at present, the 2,820m volcano is notorious for its savage eruption on April 5 - July 15, 1815.

Dompu

  • A small village with homestays.
  • Ride up into the surrounding mountains to visit traditional villages.
  • Take the road in Dompu to go south to the Hu'u Lakie beaches

Hu'u Lakie

  • One of the surfing Meccas in Indonesia (lots of cold beer and pasta).
  • Nice traveller's homestays and a long safe beach for swimming.
  • Serious breaking waves and tubes out at the reef
Bima
  • Capital of the Eastern section of the island. Second biggest city, but still a small town. The former palace has been turned into a museum devoted to the ancient kingdom of Bima.

Sape

  • Ferry harbour to Flores. Crossing takes 8-9 hours.
  • Stay overnight in this fishing village to catch the ferry at 8am on the next day.

More Beaches

  • Other good beaches are found at Talolai and Hangawera, north of Bima, Lunyuk on the south coast of Sumbawa

Dara

  • a village two kilometers from the town of Bima in eastern Sumbawa, is believed to have been the seat of the ancient Bima kingdom.
