Sumbawa Besar
- the
capital of the Western half of the island and the largest town in Sumbawa.
Stay in Hotel Pantai Kencana, 10km outside of town on the road towards
Alas on a beautiful beach.
- visit
the wooden Sultan's Palace
- change
money and fill up with petrol

Empang
- Good for a quick stop on the way to Dompu, also has
a losmen if you want to stay over night.
Mount Tambora
- Not active at
present, the 2,820m volcano is notorious for its savage eruption on
April 5 - July 15, 1815.

Dompu
- A small village with homestays.
- Ride up into the surrounding mountains to visit traditional
villages.
- Take the road in Dompu to go south to the Hu'u Lakie
beaches

Hu'u Lakie
- One of the surfing Meccas in Indonesia (lots of cold
beer and pasta).
- Nice traveller's homestays and a long safe beach for
swimming.
- Serious breaking waves and tubes out at the reef

Bima
- Capital
of the Eastern section of the island. Second biggest city, but still
a small town. The former palace has been turned into a museum devoted
to the ancient kingdom of Bima.

are found at Talolai and Hangawera, north of Bima, Lunyuk on the south
coast of Sumbawa

Dara
- a village two
kilometers from the town of Bima in eastern Sumbawa, is believed to
have been the seat of the ancient Bima kingdom.
