This page describes required GIS components, which are NOT part of the OMP Package. To be able to use OMP-GIS, you need to have the standard GIS components installed and working. |
What do you need to use OMP-GIS? Basic options:
To be able to use OMP data for GIS data analysis and dynamic mapping, you need at least a third party standard GIS software package and a basic estate map.
NOTE : minimal requirements for OMP-GIS. You need to have:
- A standard GIS software programme, like MapInfo or ArcView (or other comparable products) is required to create and manage digital maps.
- A basic block boundary map, showing block boundaries for the estate.
You can start creating thematic OMP-GIS maps, if these two objects are available. To allow future integration of other map themes (roads, rivers, satellite images, etc.) the map should be properly georeferenced / adjusted to real longitude/latitude reference points.
NOTE : neither the GIS software nor the basic block boundary map are part of the OMP-GIS package.
We assume that estates have the basic GIS components already installed if they start to implement OMP-GIS mapping. If necessary, we can provide support to aquire the software.

Advanced options to extend OMP-GIS mapping:
Additional layers and map themes can be added to the GIS system to increase the spatial relevance of the mapped data. For example:
- Estate lay-out ( division and field boundaries, location of mill, office area and housing estates)
- Roads (different layers for public, main and harvesting roads, location of harvesting ramps or collection points)
- Road maintenance (length, bridges, culverts)
- Waterways (rivers, main and field drains, location of watergates , etc.)
- Critical zones (water catchment areas, buffer zones, environmentally crtical areas and hot spots)
- Contour maps (topography or plotting of identical characeristics) and single point maps (LSU palms, ganoderma infected palms, soil pits)
Remote sensing and satellite images
Satellite images are an important addition to any estate GIS, as they capture a moment in history with great spatial detail (down to 1m resolution).
Satellite images play an important role in certain stages of the implementation of GIS:
- Documentation of estate boundaries and areas, land ownership titles, public and estate infrastructure
- Documentation of previous land use and development activities
- Identification of critical environmental areas
- Identification, verification and mapping of block areas, roads, estate infrastructure
- Basic palm count (big, small, missing)
- Actual land use patterns.
